Search for the cheapest bulk SMS in Kenya and you’ll see prices from KES 0.20 to over KES 1.00 per message. The lowest number rarely means the lowest bill. Here’s why, and how to find the cheapest option for your volume.

Why advertised prices differ so much

Networks sell bulk SMS in volume bands. Safaricom’s published tariff, for example, runs from KES 1.06 per SMS for 25,000–124,999 messages down to KES 0.11 above 10 million, with bundles paid upfront and valid for 60 days (source). A provider advertising very low rates is either buying at the top bands and sharing that across clients, or attaching conditions such as a large minimum purchase.

The hidden costs

  • Minimum top-up. A low rate that requires KES 50,000 upfront isn’t cheap if you send 3,000 messages a month.
  • Expiring credit. Unused SMS that expire after 30 or 60 days raise your real cost per message.
  • Charged failures. Paying for messages to dead numbers adds up.
  • Sender ID fees. One-off registration charges per network.
  • Slow or missing delivery. A late OTP costs you a customer, not just a shilling.

Worked example: 5,000 SMS a month

  • Provider A: KES 0.35 per SMS, minimum purchase 100,000 SMS, credit expires in 60 days. You pay KES 35,000 upfront and use 10,000 before expiry: KES 3.50 per message used.
