The same message can get very different results depending on when it lands. Here’s a practical guide to timing bulk SMS in Kenya, by type of message.
By message type
| Message | Good timing |
|---|---|
| OTPs, receipts, alerts | Instantly, any time — they’re expected |
| Appointment reminders | The day before, early evening; plus 1–2 hours before |
| Payment reminders | Morning, a few days before and on the due date |
| Retail promotions | Mid-morning or early evening on weekdays; Thursday–Friday for weekend offers |
| Restaurant offers | 10–11am for lunch, 4–5pm for evenings |
| Event reminders | A week before, the day before, and the morning of |
Month-end and payday
Many Kenyans are paid at month-end, so retail and bill-payment messages often perform better in the last days of the month and the first days of the next.
Times to avoid
- Late night and very early morning for anything non-urgent.
- Sunday mornings for promotions, when many people are at church or with family.
- Major public holidays, unless the message is about the holiday itself.
- Peak network congestion around big national events, for non-urgent sends.
Test for your audience
These are starting points, not rules. Farmers, shift workers, students and office workers keep different hours. Run a simple A/B test on timing and use what your data shows.
Schedule it
Write messages when it suits you and let them send at the right time with scheduled SMS.
